Didn't winterize engine

I have a 1997 honda outboard for my Tracker Bass boat. I just bought the boat and engine late last season and didn't get around to winterizing it. I live where it gets below freezing during the winter. Now that things are starting to warm up I want to start using my boat, but am afraid that I might now have problems. Should I get the engine checked over or should it be ok? Thanks anyone for helping me out.

I would recommend that you take your boat to a dealer or repair shop and have them check it. Call them ahead of time and see if they will look at it while you wait. If the temperature did not get too cold then I would probably just go try it.

All is not lost. Pull plugs, spray inside plug holes with fog spray, crank engine over a few times with out plugs, change lowerngear lube, flush water-lines if equip, if not get adapter and hook up with hose Remember water must flow freely for proper cooling. . Spray linkage with a good lube like wd40. Add top-lube additive to gas for decarb (add double). replace with new plugs. Check filters Gas/water, oil. Replace if need be. check lower engine for damage. prop should turn with even freely without effort. If you follow the basics there should be no problem. Dealers will charge 150 plus material on average. Buy a outboard book on your motor.
