I have a 350 chevy in a 1982 checkmate boat. I believe this is a stern drive unit. (new at boating) I started motor out of the water with no hose attached and ran motor less than 2 minutes. It now overheats when i try to use it in our local lake. What may have to be fixed or will it pull water up into engine when moving again thru water?

You probably fried the pump impeller in the lower unit and are not getting water to the engine. Not too costly if you DIY
