Got the ol' boat cleaned up & launched for the first run today and heard a bearing noise while in forward & reverse or while trimmed up so I limped her back to the trailer & came home. I did some reading and figured I will just do the u-joints and gimbal bearing while I have it open. Stop me if you think that's a bad play.
Now here is part 2. While doing my reading I remembered the bearing noise seemed a little more obvious while in gear. So I dropped the drive lubricant and it looks fine, no root beer float. The boat was only run about 10 or 15 minutes in the lake though, so it is possible there was not enough time to mix yet.
Now here is my "did I screw up" question. There is a crack in the bottom torpedo shaped gear housing with water seeping out of it. The crack is on the right forward upper side of the gear housing at about 2 Oclock. I don't have any marks around the crack. it just drips after pulling the boat out. I did not notice this last year, so it's probably new. Does this sound like a freeze crack? There are impact marks on the front of the lower, they ain't from me, but I only got the boat last spring.
Does this sound like something I should JB Weld? My first instinct is to do that and give it a try. Should I just get a case? Should I forget trying to save it and get a lower section?
My inclination is gimbal, u-joints, JB. What do you suggest to confirm I am on the right track?
