Anyone here can say if I need to remove the INTAKE MAINFOLD and VRO PUMP in order to disconnect the rod lever/rod keeper from SHIF ROD or if there is a trick to do that? (Evinrude 70HP, 2 stroke, 1986)

I am trying to service my Evinrude 70HP , 2 stroke, 1986.
But I am having hard time to remove the gear case, so not managing to change the impeller. the problem is that the Evinrude 70HP 1986 is different from the 70HP 1989 which I used to have/service and with 70HP 1986 I do not manage to move the SHIFT LEVER far enough to disconnect it from SHIFT ROD. Or not managing to move the SHIFT ROD KEEPER/ROD LEVER.

It would be hard ro remove all that in the short time I will have tomorrow, any input would be really applreciated.

Thanks in advance!

Observe the heavy duty "L" shaped round shift rod on the starboard side of the powerhead..... the one that the shift cable is attached to.

Notice the large clevis pin that goes thru it right up against the housing that retains it.... some refer to pins of that nature as a "Jesus" pin due to the language used if you lose your grip and it goes flying off to some inacessible area.

Okay.... remove the shift cable, now remove that clevis pin. Now you can simply slide that shift rod towards the other side of the engine and hence slide the shift pin connector out of the shift rod.

Now, you can take all of that other stuff off if you want to.... but isn't this easier? :)

A word of caution..... The measurement of the shift rod is critical. Do not turn it out of adjustment.

I think??? Pull 87 and then pull out #88 and the lock pin should come out and the lower drops???
