Hi everyone

Was looking thru my manual and doing some studying on timing my XR4. I see that checking the timing pointer calls out for Mercury tool C-91-58222A1 Dial Indicator.

I'm seeing it for around $150, is that about right?

I seen some at harbor freight, a dial one and a digital one for cheaper. Can these be used or is there a cheaper alternative to the $150 one?

Im not looking to run a business with it just blue moon use.

Thanks,

I use the cheap one you show. I busted the guts out of a spark plug, drilled and tapped the side of it for a set screw, Put the gauge in and was off and running. It works good.

I did a similar thing with a digital caliper and a spark plug. Here's some pictures. The caliper is a cheapie I got for under $20. Welded a tab to the plug, and tie wrap the caliper to it to use as a depth gauge.

Once again J , Once again :)

Cool stuff when I stop at harbor freight tomarrow to grab a harmonic wheel puller, Ill jump on one of those calipers. Although I dont have a welding machine, that might be the tuff part, but ill get it done.

Doesn't have to be that strong. JB weld or epoxy should work just fine.

What's the purpose of the harmonic wheel puller?

Hey J

Got an older 1956 Mecury Comet Twin Silent Six 5.9HP, need to pull the fly wheel to check the points and replace coils.

Cool about the JB or epoxy, will try tonight.

Just don't use it on the XR4. Use this one.
