I can't believe I am posting this stupid event. Tonight I was servicing my batteries, and when I was hooking up the starting battery I had the wires on correctly and forgot to put vaseline on the posts. Removed the connections put vaseline on the posts and promptly hooked them up backwards, when I heard that click I almost had a coronary. The engine is a 9 month old DF140 with 110 hrs on it. Well after I finished servicing the trolling motor battery and checking four times that I was in fact hooking it up correctly. I decided to pull the hood and check the fuses, Praying that Suzuki had provided me with adequate protection. Well guess what, the 60 amp main fuse was blown, thats the first one in the path back to the battery. The other 30 amp fuse that supply power to the charging and ecm circuits was intact. Replaced the fuse with the spare that Suzuki left in the spare fuse holder. Checked everything over again all seems OK. Switched on the ignition got my warning tones and all warning lamps and tachometer/hour meter showed proper hours, Cranked right up and voltage promptly went up to 14 as normal. I think I'm ok but still can't believe it. I thank Suzuki and God for giving them the wisdom to protect my electrical system from me. If anyone knows the part number on this weired looking fuse, I'd love to check and see what its supposed to cost before I call the stealer.

Thanks

DMC

Re: DF140 hooked up battery backwards

HI DMC, wow, that was lucky. The chances are that the protection was from a reverse polarity diode on the load side of the fuse, with normal battery connections the diode doesn't conduct and the circuit works normally, BUT, with reversed polarity from the battery the diode conducts and provides a dead short to ground through the fuse, the fuse blows before the connected electronics are blown and you're protected. By the way, this is a commonly used and cheap protection circuit used on a lot of electronics. You can probably guess what happens without this type of reverse polarity protection circuit, many $$$$$$$$$$$$$, Happy Holidays, well they are now, Ken
