I have just received a dewell tech meter I need to check my rpm but this only has a setting for 6 & 8 cyl 4 stroke not 2 I need to be able to use this for my v6 merc 175 this meter conects to negitive side of coil so my ? is this a 4 stroke v6 coil is goning to fire 6 times in 1 rev correct and my #1 coil is gona fire 1 time so do I take what I end up with and multiply by 5 Thanks in advance

The fact that this a dwell-tach means it was designed for points style ignitions (not many of those around anymore). Most four strokes today share coils between cylinders or have individual coils per cylinder, and for a distributor type ignition so the math will get a little tricky. Try setting the tach to 6. Multiply the tach reading by six and divide by two (or simply multiply by three). Since a four stroke with separate coils would deliver a pulse once every other rev, the reading would be six times less than what the tach is calibrated for. Hence multiply by six. However, since the same ignition design on a two stroke delivers a pulse every rev, you would need to divide by two. Or you could simply multiply by three. Long way around and its early in the morning so my thought process may screwed up by the fact I've not consumed enough coffee.
