Did the Mustang Plant in the Summer of '64. Does that count? Due to the '64.5 intro of the Mustang, it was the only assembly line running during the summer model changeover time. It was well worth the time and effort to watch cars being slapped together. Made you wonder how they ever came off the line looking as good as they did.

Detroit Auto Tours

I'm thinking about putting a trip together with a couple of my buddies this year and travel to the NAIAS (Detroit Auto show.

While there I want to see if we can catch a factory tour. Has anyone ever done the factory tours there? Are they worth checking out, and, how do I find info on it? Anyone know?

Thanks,
Sean

They just started one back up. Check with the Henry Ford Museum, they might have the details.

I am reviving this old thread...

Are there any new Detroit area members here that can shed some light on this question? Are there any Detroit Auto Plant tours? I can't find didily squat on the Internet about it.

Sean

I'll try to find some more info for you but this is the only one I am aware of off hand, at work not a whole lot of access to materials.

Ford Rouge

Edit: Are you intersted mainly in the plants that are still functioning or including historical aspects like former plants, museums, automotive heritage venues?

The tour of the Mercedez Benz assembly plant in Alabama is worth a long drive. The Museum is also.

Dale, that is what I was looking for.

Am I wrong in assuming there are still vehicles built in Detroit?! I guess I never considered that. I think it would be neat to see a car, rolling on an assembly line, watching it being constructed... but am I wrong in that assumption?! Are there no more factory's to do tours of... Yikes!!

Anything you can provide would be extremely helpful Dale.

Thanks,
Sean

Re: Detroit Auto Tours

Sorry for the delay.
Yes they still build a few cars around here, however to the best of my knowledge, and searching through different literature, the Ford Rouge plant is the only assembly line offering tours at this time. I wouldn't be suprised if a few more are added with the upcoming Super Bowl and all. How long and where do you plan to stay? Also how far are you willing to drive to see things? Remember our roads aren't the greatest, huge understatement, and we usaully get the start of our large accumulations of snowfall around the time of the NAIAS. How are you traveling here, if by car which route? This info will help to get you a better list of attractions. Although I can say you should definetly go to The Henry Ford Museum in Dearborn, if you like hestory hit Greenfield Village as well, museum is adjacent to the village. Go during the day and check out GM World at the Ren Cen easily accessible from Cobo Hall by foot or People Mover, elevated monorail. If you like to gamble we have three casinos near the Downtown area. Just let me know a loose itnerary and I'll help as much as I can. There are many automotive museums of varying degrees all around Detroit. There are also a good number of historical and art museums.
This site may be useful to you as well
MotorCities: Auto Heritage
