detination in 70 mod 50hp merc

Detination happened. How does one determine if it is the fault of the user or should it be covered by a secondhand warranty. It happened within 4 weeks of the sale. Surely old fuel is not to blame, and I've been advised unleaded gas is ok? can anybody comment on what else could cause it?<br />Thank you for your help.

timing set too high or lean condition........check plugs

Most likely lean condition. If something big enough gets in to stop up main jet, then that cylinder won't get any gas, but the others will pull it along for the ride. You will have noticed when this happened if it was that drastic, but once detonation begins, there is not stopping it. A partial block would cause the same thing, but would take longer to break down. Wouldn't hurt to have gas analyzed, if you make a claim on insurance, they will do this anyway. GL
