determining the gw of a trailor?

All these years of trailoring boats , I was asked the other day how do you determind the gross weight of a trailor ?-----I don't know most of the trailors that I have delt with had the info on the trailor--so how do you determind the weight<br />of a trailor??????? :)

When you say gross weight, I assume you mean the max weight for the boat AND trailer.<br /><br />1. Go by the plate<br />2. Call the dealer<br /><br />If these are not possible you can evaluate the components and get an idea. Use the smallest of the following: sum of max tire ratings (1530*2 tires), Sum of the axle ratings (1*3000), Rating of the hitch (provided the equipment is what came o n the trailer). <br /><br />You would not want to exceed the limits of any of those components.<br /><br />Larger trailers have surge brakes. The tend to be built to the brake standards of the state in which they are sold. So if you knew that you could make a guess as well.<br /><br />If you are just trying to figure out the empty weight haul it to the scale and weigh it.
