I have a small cox trailer with the small 480x8 tires /rims. I haven't re-packed the bearings in a while, and need to do so. I don't have an easy way of determining what seals I need to get before I take them apart. Can anyone help? I've done this several times before, but I never remember what size I need.

Thanks for any help

Re: Determining size of grease seal to order

I have a Microsoft Word file on my computer that I list every part I ever buy for my boat and when i buy it. Easy for future use.

Seals for that wheel are pretty standard. The number should be on the seal and can be cross referenced to other brands. You can also get a caliper and measure the outer diameter of the seal and the measure the axle diameter where the seal rides to help you deternmine the inner diameter. The inner diameter of the seal will be slightly smaller than the axle diameter.

Just did it today.

If you don't need to replace the bearings and race or don't want to remove the hub before getting the seals, degrease the back of the hub along with the outer side of the seal. The manufacturer and the P/N is stamped on the back. Call your parts store with the P/N ahead of time. Bumper to Bumper was the only one to have the bearings and seals in stock for my app. You'll be glad that you called ahead.

Yeah, I just don't want to tear it down before having the parts, and I don't need to replace the bearings, so the walmart kits are overkill. I've found the right size seal @ local parts stores, but they aren't (or weren't when I found them) double-lipped and I imagine they're not as suitable for submersion.

Thanks for the replies.

I had the same problem in not finding a local supplier of the double lipped seal in the size I needed. I used this place, got fast service and even spoke with them by phone to get the right part.

Matt, when you buy some, get extras so you can have them when you need to inspect your bearings.

So, I found out that my trailer has BT8 spindles, and therefore requires l44643 bearings and the corresponding seals. I used my power of deduction by looking at replacement hubs on one of the trailer parts sites.

FYI, if anyone else has the same question.

You are probably going to be ok. I assume the seal is 1.98" OD by 1.25" ID. I would still check. I have seen some axles that didn't follow convention and the seals were different that what was normal.
