How do I determine the prop diameter and pitch that I now have? I don't see any stampings on the outside of the prop, do I need to remove it and look on the backside of the hub? This is on a 2003 40hp Merc 2stroke.
They are usually stamped in the metal on the hub between two blades. If not take to any prop shop. The stampings are not 100% reliable if you did not buy the prop new as others in its history may have have had it repitched.
Thanks SL, I'll take it off and look a little closer. It is a new prop that came on the boat last year. I don't think it has enough pitch because I can easily overrev the engine when I trim up.
To get the right prop you need a tachometer and then determine the rpm at wide open throttle - compare it with the specs for your motor.

Not all needed changes point to the prop. You may have to raise or lower your motor on the transom as well - best do this first if need be.
