1982 Johnson 70 HP: New gas line, gas can, plugs, wires, powerpacks, starter solenoid, choke, rebuilt carbs, battery, fish finder, and bilge pump.

Worked FLAWLESSLY for 2 weeks, started in first turn, ran like a rabbit on the water. Ran great on thursday. Before I put in the lake, every day, I run it for 1 or 2 minutes on the hose to make sure it will start on the ramp, as to avoid holding up the ramp. Yesterday, started it on the hose, ran great. Get it to the ramp, starts, great! Idle thru the no wake zone, open it up....nothing. Will not get out of it's own way. Sounds like the prop is in 10 feet of mud. (It's not, it's in 20 feet of water). Take it back home, put it on the hose, runs great. Put new plugs in, re-assemble carbs, check timing, everything perfect. Today, same thing. Will not get out of it's own way when in water, will run great on the hose. What gives? What do I need to replace? Grr......

Re: desparate and frustrated!

Your not the first guy to have this problem. Check some of the previous posts..there are at least two guys who had the same problem with their evinrude/johnson's. They worked fine in the driveway..but went nowhere on the lake. I think it had something to do with exhaust back flow.. a cracked gasket was the culprit....but again, check the posts...good luck

disconnected line at each carb. Getting same "pulse" of fuel into a jar with each crank. So which gasket would be "cracked" and how would one go about replacing it? Head gasket looks easy, from looking at schematic, everything else looks hard. Other posts point people to weak spark, I could launch the space shuttle off the spark I'm getting on all 3 cyls.

Try running it in a big garbage can full of water at home to see if it does the same thing. If it does then you knoew you are on the right track.

Rich

boatman when you attempt to come out of the hole before engine falls try bumping primer button to see if it tries to grab.several people have later model 70's that experience this problem.I myself had similar problem when purchased new in 1995.carbs were set too lean. Can't adjust properly on hose.Engine needs to be in water under load for check after adjustment.determine that all three adjustment screws are equal by screwing them in all the way then backing out to original setting counting turns.mine are now opened 1 1/4 turns more than when dealer set mine up originally . hope thats the problem.

See if throttle response is better when you poke the choke. If it is look for fuel flow problems
dirt in carb.poor float adjustment etc.Run with the cowl off if it helps there may be an exhaust leak polluting the intake air.

Hey Boatman, it sounds like a high speed jet problem to me. Its possible you got some bad gas or dirt into the jet. I would pull carbs & check before I did anything else.
