So i have a lawernce portable depth finder that i was wanting to mount permently to the boat. I have 2 questions about this idea though.

1. I have a hummingbird on one side of the transom that goes to the other side of the boat that i can barely see while driving. Will this transducer interfer with the other and/or each other?

2. Can i mount the portable one to the dash and hard wire the power wires to the boat? Currently it requires 8 d size batteries, i believe that is a 12v system just not sure enough.

I was thinking of keeping it portable and just mount it to the back to answer question one. But the other one i wasnt sure enough about. My desire is to place it on the driver area so i can see my depth easier. This is a fish/depth finder i have had for what seems forever now. I got it back when i had my grandfathers bassbuster 8 ft boat, or would it just be cheaper and easier in the long run to either move the perminant one to the location i want? Also is there a setup that would allow the use of 2 units from say hummingbird off one transducer. It is a hummingbird wide 128 a older unit i know but it came on the boat when i got it and works fairly well. Thanks for the advice.

Re: Depth finder

If the transducers operate on the same frequency they will likely interfer with each other. That said, I have used front and back Eagles on numerous boats and they have not interacted. Use of one locator on two transducers, or one transducer simultaneously feeding two locators is questionable for a couple of reasons. Switches are available that allow one transducer to switch between two head units. However, running both head units simultaneously from one locator will not likely work because of the impedance mismatch that would occur by essentially paralleling the units. I'm not saying it definitely won't work but I would suspect operation would have questionable results. It sounds like you are wishing to add the portable to the helm simply because you can't see the other one. The solution would be to move the current locator to the helm on a swivel mount. When under way pivot the unit toward you. When you need to see it from elsewhere in the boat, spin it around. Johnny Ray makes a nice swivel mount and with the push of a button you can remove the unit for storage/security.

Re: Depth finder

Yea right now the hummingbird is on a turn mount that will go 360 it just doesnt angle quite right to the driver from the pass dash mount. I am also not 100 percent sure of the accuracy so i was thinking of trying the portable unit to see if it was accurate at all. Then if not i may just go get a new unit all together through the winter and sell both of the old ones, one as parts and the other which is still good just old as a portable unit that it is. Thank you silver i had no idea of the points you brought up other then the interference between the two. I am not sure of the frequencies so i will just have to see what happens so i can determine rather the hummingbird is stiill good, i had to splice the trnasducer wires. If nothing else i can sit in one location turn one on get the depth and then shut off that one turn the other one on and check the depth to see what they read.
