I'm looking for brushes and a few misc. parts for my Delco Remy starter that are not available on iboats. Delco starter part #1113521. I would like to replace:

310017 bushing
310018 bushing
379323 brush holder assembly-insulated
379322 brush package
310019 spring-brush

Anybody know where I could find any of these?

Or, does anybody happen to have a cross reference chart that would give me the Delco Remy part numbers for the brushes? I could then see if a local alternator/starter shop could still get the parts.

Why not just taking the starter to an auto electric shop? They should be able to ID the needed parts quickly.

Delco is about as common as toothpaste. If you have a Delco part number any reputable shop should have them. You might even try NAPA.

I called the local shop today and the guy said he could get any Delco parts-he probably even has them in stock. I gave him the Delco part number and after about 10 minutes of rifling though his various parts catalogs, he had nothing. Couldn't even find anything to order. He told me to bring the starter in tomorrow and he'd try to find some brushes. I'll post back after I go down there.

Those are OMC part numbers:

Re: Delco Remy Brushes Not on iboats

I took the starter motor to the local shop. I double checked that the Delco part number was indeed #1113521. However, once he saw the old brushes, he didn't need to look up anything. He simply looked around his shop until he found a set that matched and fit well inside the holders.

I'm gonna need to solder the new brushes in. I've only soldered once or twice before and the wires that I soldered were small gauge. These brushes have much heavier-gauge attaching wires.

Any good advice for soldering these in?

I can't tell you on here on how to solder them in but I've done plenty. The trick is to have everything good 'clean, use resin core solder and have a solder iron that will give you plenty of heat.

Sometimes the tab where the brush wires attach are crimped, and/or soldered. If you can work carefully, remove the old solder and apply heat while opening up the crimp carefully so as not to break it. Then crimp the new one in place, using the crimp to hold it makes it much easier to solder it in place with good results. Be sure to tin (absorb solder into the wire braid) the brush lead. Also make sure to watch for any solder splatter, as this can cause problems if it gets loose inside the starter.

Re: Delco Remy Brushes Not on iboats

The old brushes did have some crimps just before the contact pads. I opened them up and pulled the leads out of them. I then cut the old brush leads close to the contact pads since I couldn't melt the old solder. It must have been silver solder or some other high-temp stuff that my iron wouldn't melt. It wasn't a problem though. I cleaned the old contact pads and the bit of the old leads that were still attached to the pads. I then tinned the new leads. Then I put the new leads in the crimps and closed them up. That helped to hold the lead ends on the contact pads. I had no trouble soldering the ground lead. However, I had a bit of trouble with the hot lead. The guy at the shop recommended making another crimp to use directly on the contact pad. I made one out of copper due to its high thermal conductivity. Not only did the crimp hold the lead end in place, but it also pulled heat around the contact pad and helped to distribute the solder nicely. It wasn't the most beautiful solder job ever, but I believe that it is structurally and electrically sound, which is the point, and the solder wasn't interfering with the armature. The first pic is the new vs. old brush. In the second pic, you can clearly see the crimps. The third pic shows both brushes soldered in. Thanks to all for the advice on this.

Clean the commutator with fine sandpaper (rotate the armature while holding the paper) and clean the carbon carefully from between the commutator segments before reassembling. Wipe the cleaned communtator with a petroleum free solvent (alcohol, trichlor, brake cleaner, etc.)

Your solder job looks good but the true test will be when you try starting the mtr. Been there and done that. Good luck.
