Delco EST Timing Question...to shunt or not to shunt...

As most of you know, I have a pretty good thread going that's looking like it should have been titled "How to change your distributor cap by removing your engine and drive". We'll see. We're stuck in a cycle of heavy rain bands here so I am delayed for awhile.

My question is about base timing with the Delco EST distributor. My manual says to use a shunt (Volvo Penta part#885163-6) connected to +12V to set the timing to spec. (6' BTDC). Then it says to remove the shunt and check to if it's correct at 600RPM by verifying 11'BTDC and then at 1600RPM 17', +/- 1', BTDC.

What is the problem with simply setting it to 11' at 600RPM initially and foregoing the shunt?

I have searched online for this shunt with no luck. If I must do it this way, where do I get it? Are there any equivalent (non-VP)part #'s?

OK, I am rethinking. Maybe this shunt has more to do with seting up the module than the distributor. Is there a GM part number for this shunt? I'm thinking I have to have it...

Base time sets the system a hard mechanical/starting point reference. ECM will do what ever it takes to be 11deg at 600rpm. you would find the timing will show 11 deg even tho you move the dist. Unless you shunt.
The rest of the set up verifies the advance curve.
And that th e system is operating normal.
Shunt should be a grounding wire/loop.
Does this thread mean it was a crossfiring
bad wire/cap/rotor that caused the video you made.
and it is fixed now?

Got it. I can't find the part anywhere online. What do you guys use and where did you find it? Anyone work for Volvo? Is this part# available? dealer only? It's not on iboats...

I don't know if it's fixed or not. I haven't been able to test run it yet due to weather. I'm just trying to get my ducks in a row for when the weather clears up. When I do test it, I will continue to post to the other thread.

After much digging, I found a Mercruiser Part#, 817374A01. And thanks for the link. I'll arrange for one or the other tomorrow. Thanks!

You know...when I was out working on my boat this weekend and things weren't going well...I thought about what you are going through and I felt better!! :)

What an ordeal!!

I posted in your previous thread that I had crossed 2 wires once. I suggested you to look for the same. I spent 5 days on Lake Powell going 10 MPH until I finally figured it out. I must have had the perfect 2 cylinders crossed so that the spark occured at the bottom of a stroke or on exhaust strokes.

Well I'm glad I can be here for you!! :D
I found myself actually thinking about the cat who dug the '69 Chris Craft out after 10yrs and hit the water after knocking the dirt off the top of the intake. Sheesh!

Lake Powell - what a beautiful place to be in the water...

Even though the VP dealer here just checked my timing, there is no way it was done correctly. At 600rpm, I was seeing 6' BTDC. That is the spec., but not with the shunt. The manual says I should see 11' at 600rpm. That really means +5 from base timing. Thus, I must have been at 1'. I'm going to find the shunt today and it looks like the weather is clearing up so maybe my ordeal will end today!

Re: Delco EST Timing Question...to shunt or not to shunt...

like it was said, the shunt just locks it. where it ends up at any particular RPM is a function of the module.
the last one we fought would either advance all the way or nothing, replaced it, replacement module would lock into base timing but not advance, the 3rd module functioned well only bacwards. the more RPM the more it retarded, the 4th module worked.
thats why its imperative to test all the module functions at the prescribed RPM and test methods.

Re: Delco EST Timing Question...to shunt or not to shunt...

Had a similar experience. The new module I had installed would not lock into base timing or advance. I replaced it with the old module and it locked into base timing (rpm dropped when B+ applied) and then advanced fine. If I have any more trouble with it I am going to replace the whole ignition system with a D.U.I. Marine. I have a D.U.I. on my CJ-7 and it is one of the best improvements I have ever made.
