Not to sound like a simpleton, but when a motor is "sunk" what does this mean? Water in the combustion chamber? When a motor is "rebuilt", what is most commonly replaced? Thanks for your help, from someone who runs outboards 1 week a year.

I'll take a stab at it, to my knowledge sinking is not an outboard term, I think it means submersed below the water. Rebuilt usually means new bearings, rings at least and new pistons, rods, crank where/if required. Hope this helps, are you lookin at buying something that has sunk and been rebuilt?

Sunk means - well - it sunk :D The entire motor went under water. If in salt water everything electrical is probably dead or dying. The bearings are probably ruined. Fresh water can do in a lot of items also. Rebuilt, now that's an interesting word. I'm sure there are people out there, that will tell you the motor was rebuilt, if they just changed a spark plug. There is no standard for what constitutes a rebuild, as far as I know.

Rebuilt means the whole motor was taken apart everything was cleanes and put in an acid bath, all perishable items hav bean replaced (IE spark plugs, imellors, rubber hoses) ever sal has bean replaced and the paint was striped primed and repianted. It is basicly a new motor and should work pefectly. I am doing that to my 1937 elto pal for the second time.... Its an ole motor and I hit something hard when running it a day after rebuilt... it takes a lon time to rebuild an engie yourself...... I had experts do th acid stuff. I gave them the pieces. It is not always done this way.!!!

Ill skip ahead. If your thinking of buying a "sunk and rebuilt" motor, dont. There are plenty of much better motors around that were never sunk. A rebuild can last 1 hr or 1,000 hrs, but should at least come with 12 mo. warranty from a reputable shop.

Hi portercat

A correct powerhead rebuild should include:

Bore of cylinders, new pistons and rings.
New bearings, mesuring cranck wear.
New gaskets. Usually, if done by shops, warranty.

Compression and performance will be equal to new motor.

As a rebuild usually means the carbs and ignition are put back on, the errors that caused the need of rebuild, can sometimes still remain. Warranty does cover the rebuild, of coarse not the carbs people put back on, after getting the powerhead back from shop, not the burn, after running lean with a clogged carb i.exa.

If done correct, a rebuilded motor will last almost like a new.

Thanks guys (and girls). A lot of ads for outboards say they were "rebuilt" (especially on e-bay) without specifying what this means. Seems like a common general term.
