Deferred success
What's next? Failure is part of life! Accept it! Learn from it! and Try it again until you get it right! It infuriates me when they try to soften kids like this. Will their boss be soft on them like this in the real world? No way!
Bassy

LONDON (Reuters) - The word "fail" should be banned from use in British classrooms and replaced with the phrase "deferred success" to avoid demoralizing pupils, a group of teachers has proposed.
Members of the Professional Association of Teachers (PAT) argue that telling pupils they have failed can put them off learning for life.
A spokesman for the group said it wanted to avoid labeling children. "We recognize that children do not necessarily achieve success first time," he said.
"But I recognize that we can't just strike a word from the dictionary," he said.
The PAT said it would debate the proposal at a conference next week.

Spot on Duna... I fail to understand why do we pay idiots to dream up stupid ideas like this one and why do the media pick up on and then pedal such BS? Maybe too many of the perpetrators of this cr@p have deferred success in their lives! We're turning the world into a place where the lowest common denominator rules.

I still haven't gotten over the fact that teachers can't use red ink to grade papers any longer in order to avoid demoralizing pupils.

This stuff has gotten so far outta hand that its ridiculous.

I wonder if I told my boss that my service van had deferred success on starting this morning, or one of the tires had deferred success in holding in air.

Maybe start telling our politicians that they are nothing but a deferred success for our country.

I too am sick of this crap! (what is PC for Crap?)

PC will be the downfall of society.

I wanted to send you a Christmas Card, but my attorney advised me to send the following:

Please accept with no obligation, implied or implicit, my best wishes for an environmentally conscious, socially responsible, low stress, non-addictive, gender-neutral, celebration of some sort of holiday on or about the winter solstice, practiced within the most enjoyable traditions of the religious persuasion of your choice, or secular practices of your choice, with respect for the religious/secular persuasions and/or traditions of others, or their choice not to practice religious or secular traditions at all, and a fiscally successful, personally fulfilling, and uncomplicated recognition of the onset of the generally accepted calendar year 2005, but not without due respect for the calendars of choice of other cultures whose contributions to society have helped make America great (not to imply that America is necessarily greater than any other country or is the only "America" in the western hemisphere), and without regard to the race, creed, color, age, physical ability, religious faith, or sexual orientation of the wishee.

If you choose, please spread the joy, or other emotion of your choice.

This is A Politically Correct Christmas Card

BEST WISHES, I'm not implying it's the best but merely suggesting you have a SUPERLATIVE HOLIDAY (it's your choice of course) :p

And they have the nerve to use the phrase "Professional Association of Teachers" should be replaced with "Idiotic Eggheads Unable to Deal With Reality in a Manner That Would Make Them Productive Members of Society."

No offence to all our wonderful teachers out there because its one of the most important jobs in the world. For that reason alone, it makes me irrate that we are teaching our kids to be weenies and wimps.

If they want to see demoralizing, they should have attended the Catholic school I went to. That'll teach them how to buck up.

Demoralizing our kids by verbal abuse is one thing, but red ink and the word failure is way too extreme. It really makes me sick. And they expect by not using negative words this will prepare them for the big bad world.

IMHO, this type of PC crap only sets our kids up for self destruction later in life when they hear it and can't handle it.

We are raising kids that will have no backbone.

Dumbing Down,

Because we can't have our children "failing" at anything these days, the UK government has lowered the standards for passing O & A level exams (the exams taken by kids before they leave school) the result of this action is that over 80% of them attain the required results to go on to university (when I left it was 16%). We now have students taking 4 year degree courses in subjects like Media Studies, Household Managment etc etc the list is endless. What a waste of time and money.

Re: Deferred Success?Give me a break!

It has been around for years. This practice has been called outcome based education, part of the mainstreaming plan. Also has had many other names for it. This type of teaching and grading has been tried in mostly low income, minority schools across america for years. It has failed each time, but keeps coming back with a new name and a few new ideas.
When my wife was teaching in an indian reservation they had this program there. No red ink, no failing grades, nothing negative. Report cards read mastered for an A, needs improvement for a B, and so on.
If a child could not learn 5th grade math they would move on to 6th grade, but would return to the 5th grade for that math class. problem nobody ever thought ahead about is when that child is in 12th grade and still can't do the work. They graduate that child and call him a community contributor.
They also with this program decided based on intelligence testing early in elementary school what position they will take in life. They named them community contributors, community leaders and so on. Kind of a marxism thought process.
This is just the newest round of this type of teaching.
Now the communities that did this are finding serious problems because these children are now adults and when they fail it crushes them. They are not in any way prepared for the real world.

I have failed, I have succeeded. I'll strive for success, every time.

The problem is that we are now punishing the succesful.

Bassy,

There will always be doers and takers. It is written, as you know.

Unfortuneately, the takers are growing in number.

No need to fear, human nature will overcome the want, by few, for socialism.

We, IMHO, have a lost generation or two, but todays children show promise.
