I have a 2007 lowrance fish/deepth finder mounted at the back bottom of the boat, sometimes it reads but most of the time the deepth number will just keeps flashing on the screen with the same number no matter where you go.

Sometimes stop the boat will help but not guaranteed it will work, the chance of working properly while the boat is moving is about 10% and 30% while the boat is not moving.

I' ve tried to change all the settings, frenquency, deepth, sensitivity, etc, and adiusted the mounting more firmly but none of them worked. Anybody has any idea or should I go and get a new one?

And anybody has recommendation on which one I should buy? Just want to get a proper reading of the deepth. Already broken the prop twice with the deepth finder.

Thanks

Re: Deepth finder works periodically

In it's simplest form the transponder sends a signal out and that signal is bounced off the bottom and returned to the unit. The head translates that information and displays the information on your screen. If the signal either going to the bottom or comming back is blocked or not strong enough you'll get erratic readings.

Blocked - Is the transponder positioned on the transom in such a manner that it provides a clear, unblocked path to the bottom and back again?

Strength - Is the cable from the transponder still in it's original factory condition and is the connection to the head unit solid and clean.

1. If the cable has been cut and spliced it will still work if it's been done properly. Often this is the source of problems.
2. If the signal is blocked you can remount it so it is clear of obstructions.
3. If the transducer is mounted too close to the engine/drive unit it can cause erratic behavior but should still produce results when stopped.
4. If the head unit is faulty, replacing the transducer will not help. You can try buying an inexpensive sounder and testing with it or send the head unit in for repair.
