As a Canadian I am used to cold, but its been colder than -40 for the last 5 days.
And when I think there is 5 months more of this boating seems pretty far away. Seems like it gets colder every year.

It has been so cold in northern BC that the cable we where pulling into an underground conduit froze the water and stopped dead, need to get the steam truck out again to loosen it so we can pull in the remaining cable.

At minus 40 don't things start to break just from being moved? I can't imagine every wanting to leave my house? Are your heating bills off the charts or are you just SUPER well insulated?

Just insulated like everyone else. I built my house so I know exactly the quality of the job, which is important. Heating is expensive but there is no getting around that.
And yes, things bust just being moved. It took me an hour to get my tractor running so I could push a clear space in front of the house so we can "teather the horses" so to speak. Or in other words, plug all our vehicles in. Tires are square, batteries freeze and bust if they are low.
My buddies grader has a broken axle. I can't imagine changing a grader axle in these temps.

I took my little girl outside this morning and threw a glass of hot water into the air. Turns into ice vapor immediately and drifts away.

Re: Deep freeze

Was -28F air temp at our cabin and -15F or so at home. Staying warm isn't the issue, it's when something breaks such as the snowmobile when out on a ride or you get a flat tire in the car that is the problem. There's no forgiveness at these temps.

When my dog went to the hydrant, the warm stream broke it. So now I have a 20ft. column of ice
sitting on top of a broken hydrant in front of my house. Maybe I'll put a string of lights on it.

Do you need special heaters for the inside of you car as well?

Re: Deep freeze

Its not the -16F that bothers me, but the fact that this is only the first week of December.
The last month has been the coldest start to winter that I can remember.

Can't wait to see what January brings us.

No, but some cars are much better than others. Sometimes you have to drive around scraping the inside of the windows.
Some cars don't make any heat until you drive them. Leaving them run at -45 doesn't do much but warm the motor. When I was a kid I had a Datsun 1200 and a 510. Those early Japanese cars really didn't have heaters that were meant to cope with northern temps.
My F350 will roast the passengers!

Block heater is a must and putting some sort of a winter cover in front of the rad helps to keep the coolant warmer, I use a chunk of cardboard when it get under -15c on the big trucks.

That reminds me, I should probably go unplug the truck......

Re: Deep freeze

The old air cooled VWs were horrible in frigid temps. Burn your left foot from the sill vent and the defroster cleared about 6 square inches. And don't sit at a traffic light too long - The motor needed to rev to push the little bit of heated air.

YUP!

I try to not keep the trucks plugged in for more than 2 hours because you only get so many hours out of a block heater and they are a #$#@ to replace, especially when you need it and its cold. :mad-new:
