Deep Cycle vs. Cranking/Starting Battery - Which one to use.

I am running a 1979 70 Hp Johnson Outboard. I have been using a deep cycle battery to start the motor and run one or two accessories like lights and a radio. I have since removed the radio. I replaced the battery two years ago and it looks like I need to again. Its not holding a charge. (I am not good at maintaining the battery over the winter but looks like I will need to learn). I am now wondering if I should be using a Cranking/Starting Battery instead of a Deep Cycle.
What is the difference between the two and which do you recommend for starting the motor and running lights? Does my motor re-charge the battery while it is running?
Thanks in advance.

If you are only using the battery for starting the engine and do not have anything else in the system, it doesn't matter. Your ehgine should have a charging system on it. Do you live in a cold climate, you could install a battery tender on you battery, will increase the life of your battery.

Just starting and running lights. Although I can't remember the last time we ran at night. It does get cold here so I am definitely looking into a battery tender.
Any suggestions on size of the battery? or should I get the biggest that will fit?

I've used only starting batteries for years BC they are better suited to starting loads than deep cycle batteries. I typically get five years or more from my batteries. Deep cycle are batteries better suited to electric trolling motor useage.

In your case I'd get a starting battery and the biggest one that will fit. After you put it in, put a volt meter across the battery when running and see if it comes up to about 14.2 volts or so. This will tell you the charging system is working.
