Help; I have a deepcycle battery thats just off warranty .The problem is if I charge it up say Saturday it goes to a full charge, stays for three days or so and then goes down to half charge and stays. My question is there any thing I can do to revitalize it. Or do I throw the (d**n) thing away .I haven't used it too much just occasionaly for an electric trolling motor when needed. Thanks Plmbr

Howdy Plmbr.

Sounds like one or more shorted cells. Not much you can do. Throwing it away is illegal most places. . . lead and acid, y'know.

Good luck. :)

Anyplace that sells batteries MUST take the old one in exchange.

The key to keeping a battery good is to get it charged up as soon as you are done using it. I have seen posts recommending fast charge or slow charge but the key is to do it as soon as you get it home. Also check the water levels and make sure those cells are always under water.

Plmbr don't know if you a charging in the boat or out. If you are out and sitting battery on concrete you may want to try wood. Concrete will draw the charge out of the battery. I can't tell you why, just know that it does.

Re: deep cycle battery

Concrete has been debated on and on for years. Some believe that, some don't. I don't, since it has never happened to my batteries and no one has been able to give an explanation that satisfies me about why that should be the case.

Eurolarva's advice is golden- faithfully keep a battery charged asap afterwards helps immeasurably. So does only letting run down to about half charge. Run it down much more and that battery will just not last as long as it would if you only go half way. If that just isn't enough electricity either get a bigger battery next time or get two of the same kind when you replace the weak one and run them in parallel.
