Hi, I would like to enquire if anyone can assist me with the correct way of laying out carpet on a boat deck. I have just finished building a16ft mono-hull centre console boat. It is completely glassed and sealed throughout and build according to specifications with marine ply and 450g double biased glass.
I decided to carpet the deck in stead of painting with non-slip. My carpet is 1.8m wide in roll format. The deck width is 1.7m. Do I stitch the carpet in the middle of the deck, or do I run the carpet down the middle and stitch the gunnel sections? Regards

Not sure I understand what the " stitch " is means or "gunnel " for that matter. gunwale , which is the topside of the sides of your boat that you step on to get in the boat. Think you mean fastening along the sides . If your talking about fastening the carpet to the deck , mine was just done. We went with button snaps for easy removal , being able to wash off the deck whenever , get at anything under the mats for whatever reason and the replacement of sections if need be. My 32' has 9 separate sections of Marine Mat , I had a extra mat made for the fighting deck in case the pattern was ever discontinued and longevity with 2 mats. The snap buttons are all on the perimeter of all the mats and requires a little tug to fasten them , helps keep it taut and in place that way. Have had 5 guys scrambling around with no issues , a ton of fish have hit the deck and it washes right off , including blood .

I think by ‘stitch’ they mean ’where should the seams between pieces of carpet be located’.

Then I am still confused , he states deck is 1.7m wide and material is 1.8 wide. In my mind 1.8 will cover 1.7 without any seams needed.

you glue the carpet to the sides of the hull, you trim at the floor/side seam

or you glue to the sides and make the deck snap in. however that requires you to hem the cut edges.

When I removed my glued-in carpet, the seam was at the junction of the deck and the gunwale.
