My buddy called me the other day and said he was heading out fishing the next morning at 6am, and to meet him at the ramp if I wanted to go. I had the day off and am not one to turn down a fishing invite. We motored around for about an hour trying to find the perch and finally landed on the Mother-Lode. We were snapping up nice ones at about 60ft, and since we figured they were goners after hauling them up that far he kept most of them for a fish fry for his family. We were about to pack it in at 10am when I got this nice tug on the line and landed a whopper. Biggest one I've ever seen/caught. I've been trying to move up from the smaller panfish/etc but if this is what the lake's providing I'm staying in it. I didn't measure it but it was at least a foot long and decently heavy. Either way I thought I'd share for the perch-lovers. For size reference I'm about 5'10" and 285#, and I'm holding that about a foot away from me.

Nice looking perch, our season dosen't open here till the 8th and I don't have time off till the 18, but then look out. My boat is going for it's maiden voyage on a great little lake where we alway catch our limit on nice size perch some as big as the one your holding.

I've been fishing this lake for over 30 years now and when I was a little kid we used to haul them in all day to the point of boredom. Lately though, they're just not as numerous, and NEVER that big anymore. DNR says it's because of the invasive species like the Gobies. Hate those little buggers. I unserstand though that the larger predatory species like Walleye and Smallmouth are gorgin themselves on them. I hope they overeat and we don't see those anymore.

Might be just in time for the Asian Carp invasion...

Now that's a whopper of a perch, nice catch:D

Are you pulling those out of Lake Charlevoix? I caught a huge steelhead there once, great place to fish.

Yeah, on the North arm, right out in front of Northwest Marine Yacht Basin. I normally fish the South Arm as we have a house on the water in East Jordan adn that's where I keep my fishing boat, but I'm learning the bigger water this year.

I read you used to live in Petoskey. Where are you now?

Well...unfortunately I'm currently living just north of Lansing. Not nearly close enough to the big lakes to keep me happy:)

Having graduated from MSU I've had enough of this area to last a lifetime.

I'm hoping to move north to the Traverse City area soon as I have a chance to be promoted to a new office there. I sure would enjoy being back up north:D

Re: Decent Perch

I went down to Metro Detroit last weekend to attend a communion party and couldn't get back fast enough. I'm enjoying my mundane life of Fishing, Boating, Golfing, and generally spending time with my wife and children. Sure beats working myself into an early grave and taking meds so I didn't go postal on someone...
