Decarbonizing motors

I've read alot about decarbonizing outboard motors on this site and how it can help the motor run better, but I have never heard of this. What exactly is the decarbonizing process.

The decarb process. Click here. <br /><br />It's biggest benefits come from when there's carbon fouling the ring lands on the pistons, causing the piston ring to stick. That actually lowers compression.<br />Combustion chamber deposits at their very worst can glow, causing preignition. They can also increase compression, making that worse.<br />Exhaust deposits restrict flow through the exhaust.<br /><br />Good luck, and welcome to Iboats!<br /><br />EDIT: Sorry angus - was editing when you posted.

Remove carbon build up from combution chamber which frees up rings and increases compression.
