decarbing?

Hi, I too am a newbie and a novice. I have a 1990 Force 50. At the end of the season last year the motor started racing and running rough. I couldn't shut off the motor. I turned off the ignition, disconnected the battery and it still kept running. I ran it out of gas and tried again- replaced the plugs but the same thing happened and they quickly fouled up. Is this due to carbon build up? In any case how does one decarb? Thanks

Re: decarbing?

Check out the Engine FAQ area for a couple discussions on the subject. I have no doubt you need to do this procedure. Can you choke the motor to stop it if this ever happens again? Some ignition systems may not like having the battery disconnected with the engine running, though I appreciate the urgency of the situation.

Re: decarbing?

Use the search feature above, search for "run away", the subject has been covered a few times.

Disconnecting a running outboard from its ground (battery), can and usually does significant damage to the rectifier. If the rectifier has been damaged, your tach will not work and you motor will not charge your battery.

The best/fastest way to stop a run away motor is to stop the fuel and air flow to the engine by covering the carb intake.
