This weekend I decarbed my '89 Johnson 40 for the first time. I've had it a year.
I used the J/E Bombardier engine tune.
The smoke wasn't that bad. A lot less than I expected. I saved a little & filled up the cylinders & replaced the plugs.
It started right up later & didn't run any worse than before. Actually it idled a little better, but that was probably the new plugs.

Smoke not that bad does not sound right.I did mine with deep creep sea foam last week and it was windy and I let out a smoke screen 007 would have been proud of.Charlie

Re: Decarb

I've used both Power Tune and Sea Foam and Sea Foam will absolutely "out smoke" the Power Tune any day of the week, and that's in more than one way - my observation/opinion.

Re: Decarb

I doubt if the engine had ever been decarbed. The 2nd owner, an uncle in law, said he didn't think the motor had more than about 250 hours on it.
There was smoke, maybe three or four times as much as just running on muffs.
This was the first time I ever decarbed an outboard. I've been using amsoil powerfoam on garden equip. for a while w/ good results.
Since the instructions say wait 3 to 16 hours after decarbing to run again, I guess the chemicals in the Bombardier product may not be as agressive as Sea Foam.

Re: Decarb

At 250 hrs I wouldn't expect to see much buildup in the motor. It just doesn't happen that fast unless the motor is out of tune or worn badly.

If the J/E Bombardier engine tune is close in formula to the old OMC Tuner it should be good. I've used OMC Tuner (through the carbs)and it gets the parts looking new.
