i kinda liked this forum in the past mainly because everyone could just give their point of view without trying to redefine everyone else's point of view, then countering it. you know, state your piece, let someone give their piece, all with optimistic views, not harsh comebacks...

i think it would be nice if the iboats admin opened a new section named "Debates". then it would be understood whats going to happen when you post a comment-lol

ok, maybe 'Nothing but Jokes, Puns and Food for Laughs'... :D

ok, what do you think? (yes, about any of this)

[i am stepping away, be back soon. don't wait up]

That would be ok, but they would have to monitor it the same way they do the other forums cause you would still have young eyes looking in every once in a while and you know how heated it would get.
ok, maybe 'Nothing but Jokes, Puns and Food for Laughs'
We already have that in this forum now. :D
It is a nice place and yea it gets heated some times, thats for sure, but it would not do anyone much good to have a "Debate" forum cause as I stated above the moderators would have to park in it to try to keep some kind of peace. :D

Re: Debating 101

How about if you just add the word "debate" in the title of your post if you intend for the post's content to be debated?

I should have added this to the title of my post (((DEBATE)))) ;) :D :D

Re: Debating 101

you know what bo? ;) i really, reeeeeelly appreciate your comment. only because you are a highly educated person... i like to think that you remember my comments. but yes, i am serious. i still don't believe the internet, or most of the forums on the internet were arranged for people to debate topics. now i may be wrong, and God knows i haven't been forum shopping in 5yrs. but i still look at the internet forums as what is there:
plain people who have an interest in meeting & talking to strangers from all over the world.

i am hurt by what seems to me to be prejudice in these forums lately. just because i put up my comments, does not mean i wish to be chastized, lambastisized, or ostracized (i learned these fancy words during JesseJ's speeches on the radio/tv/whatever invades your home)!

ok, that is a whole new ballgame. i will feel somewhat afraid to even 'join' in on a new topic, if i think my words will be dissected, do you know what i mean? i come here to talk to others, not for the meaning of life. nor for the scolding of others. if someone sees things differently, then shouldn't you expect that when you come here? but not to argue against their thoughts. maybe give another point of view.

and i guess i have gotten 'in on the kill' by emotions sometimes, but this is how i feel, right here, right now. i have of late been coming away with a more serious & often -dang i hate it when i can't think of the word- a 70's word... anyway,
hey! ok - melancholy feeling.

Re: Debating 101

I'm puzzled! I think the debates on this forum have been very, very civil. I frankly am impressed. I have seen very little in the way of personal attacks.
I suppose if a person is not prepared or willing to defend their point of view, or if any disagreement is disagreeable, they should not participate.
But healthy exchange of ideas is a good thing, and defending one's point of view is a good thing.
Something I learned long ago: Nobody knows everything, and everyone knows something.

ARTICLE II:
You do not have the right to never be offended. This country is based on freedom, and that means freedom for everyone -- not just you! You may leave the room, turn the channel, express a different opinion, etc., but the world is full of idiots, and probably always will be ... and like the rest of us, you need to simply deal with it. :D

Re: Debating 101

Yes Ebb, I appreciate the fact that sometimes the "debate" might intimidate some from posting their ideas. That is unfortunate. I agree that you should never be "-ized" ;) in any form on this forum because of a differing opinion, but unfortunately that can occur from time to time. I am also careful about what I type on here because of this fact. Sometimes, not careful enough, and that is why i depend on people like plywood (i.e.) to interpret my comments in a nonagressive and cordial way. As you can see, he seems to appreciate my views as important enough not to take our differences in opinion personally. I respect him and his ideas more because of the way we debate difficult ideas professionally verses name calling. I actually value the opinions that I read that differ from my current beliefs about these issues more. It can either change my beliefs by exposing me to a different side of the equation or, it can confirm for me that I am on the right track. I really do think I get something from it.

A good point to consider is that on this forum, all we know about you or any person on here is the information that is provided by the individual posting. Because of this, I feel these type of forums have the "potential" to allow for very honest debate without the fear of persecution for ones beliefs. NO, I am not talking about government persecution, but from the "political correctness" ideas from ones friends, colleaques, and neighbors.
I also understand this unfortunately allows people the anonymity to post some outlandish ideas/oversimplifications just to recieve a reaction. Unfortunately, that is the price of freedom and open debates. Some people give dishonest opinions and reasons that undermine the values that others are debating in good faith.
But, Hey.. I really enjoy debating some of these touchy subjects and I respect all (well, almost all) of the opinions I have read. ;) :D :D

You make a great point in your original post, but I hope the cure is just to enforce courtesy instead of stopping the debate. :) :) :D

trollhole :D

i understand, beaux, that there are alot of people who really crave debates, or like to use them as a tool to learn, or to hone their views.

i just like a little more relaxed level i guess.

but maybe i'm the only one here that feels that way.

i've been through 3 co buyouts in 3yrs, so maybe i've just gotten my fill of debates here on the job. ;)

i liken this place to my R & R :D

Re: Debating 101

That makes perfect sense Ebb.... I am going to practice some Iboats "buddhism" and not post until I have "meditated' on it for a while.... maybe that will take some of the urgency and confrontation out of my remarks..... After all, I am like you and only get on Iboats for a 'break' from stress and sometimes to learn something or help someone.
My change will probably only last for one day though!!! Some of the things I read on here tend to have the same effect as the little kid poking the cute little sleeping Lion in a cage !!! LOL
;) :D :D
