90 hp Honda 4 stroke BBBL4801958 on 24' pontoon boat/ 45 hrs on rig. That's the good news. Lady called me to help get her boat cleaned up and running, her husband died 4 yrs ago and boat was stored under a stand of pine and oaks... I can say this is the first time I have cleaned a boat starting with a pitchfork! Cleaned up now and pulled sending unit to get inside the plastic tank , pulled 12 gal. yellow fuel out, can't see inside to well (location of sending unit not real handy) added 5 gal of non-ethanol fuel and used primer bulb to bucket and have combo of fuel and mollases looking material coming out. Tried different solvents and only thing that cuts this mollases is denatured alchohol...Maybe I can make some sort of attatchment with a copper tube and spray inside tank to wash this stuff out..So I pulled drain plug from upper carb and it had same goo on it so it will be four carb clean out. Proceding to remove intake shroud to get to carbs , I can't get to the 10mm bolt between inner side of shroud and block. The plastic is curved as to allow acces but I can't get a socket in there for anything, tried a quarter " flex and it won't got between plastic and block. I am not positive this is holding the shroud as it has some wiggle with other bolts out but it sure seems like it's the culprit. Is this some Honda special moment here or? Anyone? Please don't tell me you have to pull the flywheel and pulley to get the plastic shroud off beneath the flywheel to get at the bolt for the intake shroud... Anyway if I can ever get to carbs to rmove them I intend to clean them with the usual means (gumout etc) then take them for an ultrasonic bath, question, the solution I have is a water soluable bath, do you think it will work on whatever this goo is? any tips or watchout fors are appreciated. Thanks...

Howdy,

Parts "DIP" has been reduced to fairly ineffective stuff by the people that are trying to protect us from ourselves.....

I have found that once I get a carb apart, I can use acetone to dissolve "stuff" in carburetors that have had old gasoline sitting in them for years.

You may have to let it sit for a few days. And maybe use compressed air to clear idle circuits and let it sit again etc..... Using acetone, plan on getting a repair kit. It's not good on rubber float-valve tips, etc.

Nowadays, I do my winterize-shutdown on avgas. It doesn't produce varnish like the current mogas does!

Cheers,

Rick
