Dealer's Insentive?

Got my boat back a month ago and this morning for whatever reason I took the cover off and found two brand spanking new batteries inside. My imediate reaction was why did they take the batteries out. I went to put the batteries back in and found that the old batteries were still there but completely dead (the green indicator leads turned black). So I replaced both batteries with the new ones; turned on the key and realized three hours has been added to the hour guage. What is going on people? I smell a rat......

OK, I am confused... did you get two new batteries from the dealer? And did you take those out, give them back, and go buy two more new ones?? Just because the little green eye is black, doesn't mean the battery is junk, that's a common misconception. It means that the battery has to be completely recharged before you can perform an accurate load test on it.
As far as discharged batteries and 3 hours more on engine, they left the key on in the "run" position and the hour meter counted up 3 hours before the batteries discharged. A mistake, but one that lots of people make.

Re: Dealer's Insentive?

Thanks Tilliam, I am now on the right track. I was thinking of something more sinister for the fact that I have a DVD player and a killer surround sound system hooked up, I figured one of the guys might be playing with it (on company time ofcourse), hence the batteries depletion. And another thing, the engine has to be running for the hour meter to count up right? At least that is my understanding....Then again I am willing to learn something new.

I now have 4 batteries. Two new ones and two old ones that was originally in the boat. I was confused as to why they didn't just replace the old batteries, but instead gave me two extra. Will if I can find a spot, I'll make a 3 batteries system.

Again thanks for clearing the cobweb in my head.

Re: Dealer's Insentive?

the fact that you have a DVD and killer stereo definately makes me think the shop was using it.
I do not believe that all hour guages are wired, so that the engine has to run. I think mine has to be running, but I have heard the tales of diesel owners who shut down from the flybridge on Friday, and come back Monday and they have put 200 hours on, because they didn't turn off the engines in the engine room.
Quick test, turn your key on in the final run position, and see if the hour meter starts counting.
I too am not sure why they didn't just take out the drained batteries. Maybe they are thinking that they didn't ruin yours, but since they had movie & popcorn night while servicing it, they'd give you two new batteries as compensation?!
