I just bought the first boat motor of my life. I layed it on its side in my truck to bring it home, and it was leaking oil from the water intake: my first repair before my first use - go figure - and on a Force to beat it all...remedy = lower unit reseal labor/kit and water pump reseal kit-new impeller. Before and after pressure and vacuum test - and 'shift test', with clean up to buildup on the lower unit shaft. Damage? $398!!!!Cost more than the 1987 50 HP motor- did they stick it too me sharp and hard or is this about the right labor cost, for you techs out there?

Sounds about right if not a little cheap. Remember that most shops are now charging 70 or more an hour for their labor.Sounds like alot but dealers have to do this in order to turn some kind of profit after they pay their own insurance and taxes and insurance now is killing alot of small buisinesses. With those labor rates in mind ,it is hard to walk away from a marine repair situation without dropping a couple hundred bucks.

How far down th NC Coast? If I need any work done it would probably be worth my while to drive down as far as Greenville. In the tidewater area you can buy a used lower unit for $800 with a guaranty of 30 days but it would cost around $700 to have one resealed and water pump done. That was what they wanted last year. I did it myself.<br />Good luck.
