alright, so i found a evinrude 9.5 on craigslist. guy was askin 350 and i offered him 250 cash today via phone.
(normaly i wouldnt offer over the phone before seeing somthing but the guy lives 30 mins away so i wanted to see if it would be worth the trip). he then said 275 but i wasnt budging off of 250. So anyways this thing is mine for 250 if i want it. judging from the pictures it has a pretty ugly factory paintjob but it seems to be all there. guy said he'd be more than wiling to let me see it run in a barrel. would you guys do 250 for this specific motor? guy says its a 1971 and runs solid. ive watched a few of these go on ebay up into 400 but they have a clean paintjob on them unlike this one. tell me what you think. thanks!rude3.jpgrude2.jpgrude4.jpgrude.jpg

Hi JR....

I'd suggest that you read posts on here and also maybe on AOMCI before purchasing that motor; unless you have already decided that it is the model you want.

I have never owned one; but I have read that they are a bit different (challenging) to work on becasue of OMC's efforts to make everything so compact and low-profile. I've also read that they aren't as strong a runner as the 9.9/15 HP versions that followed.

But; I'm sure that being an OMC powerhead...they are well made and all.

Lets see what others have to say....

I agree with the previous posts
I believe its a worked up 7.5 power head.
I also have a 1971 model and its a strong runner without problems.
It doesn't look bad for the year either.

I've worked on 2 of 'em for neighbors. They run nicely like all OMC's. However, they often have motor mount and exhaust seal problems that are a pain to fix. That motor has a lot of primer showing on the powerhead, symptomatic of a possible severe overheat in the past. I personally don't like the 9.5's, and they are just plain awful for dropping screwes in to the midsection when working on the carb and such.
That looks like a really well-used specimen. However, if it runs well in the bucket and starts up and idles smoothly with the cover on, $250 is probably a good price. The lower units are just as easy as any of them, and just as likely to have worn clutch dogs which slip out of gear during wide open throttle.
===probably more than you wanted to hear... :)

I just bought a 9.5 last sat. Its a 1966 model. Runs like a top, the guy I bought it from his grandfather had it since it was new. I did pay $400 for the unit. I had a 9.9 Johnson 1985 that overheated and am waiting on the pistons. I will more than likely keep the 9.5 and sell the 9.9. I think if you take good care of these machines you wont have a problem, but that is just my opinion.

You are correct of course. No one here posting said that they were bad motors. OMC sold that configuration for many years and they were very popular. Finding a well taken care of one ....sure.

The one in the OP's pictures though looked kinda marginal; cosmetically rough with signs of a serious overheat. And; buying a motor that old pretty much guarantees that it's going to be owner-maintained...and there are some issues with those models that make some repairs more difficult...and some parts harder to find.

I really liked those motors when they were new. However, that was then and now is now. BRP seems to be bent on getting them obsoleted. Many parts are listed as no longer available, including the various exhaust seals and motor mounts. Those are the problematic parts that are difficult to replace, if you can find them.

Normal service work on the 9.5 is easy. But when you have to split the shell for things such as mounts, that is a major job for the novice, and expensive labor job for the pro.

I still like them, but don't think I'd buy one today.
