Dead stern drive trim

Buddy called me today with an issue. Was ready to go out on his boat, got it in the water ready to go, and the trim is completely dead. No up, no down, no nothing. I went down and had a quick look at it and all I can tell is that these is power to the pump. Other than that, I'm no electrical genius and have no idea what could be wrong. It's just dead between the control and the pump (or so it seems) I did find an inline fuse, but it's fine. Anyone have a starting point I can steer him to? It's a 99 Maxum, if that means anything.

I'm no expert here, but first things I'd check are:

Battery: Make sure you actually have 12v power.

Trim motor: Try both the controls on the throttle and also the trailer trim button. Does it make any sound like the motor is running for either? There are tests you can run with an ohms meter, but someone else will have to advise you on that....or you can probably find it on the intraweb.

Fluid: If your trim motor isn't running, this probably isn't the issue, but make sure there is fluid and that the fluid is clear.

Well, went over with a jump n carry pack. Took the wires off the pump and powered them directly. Everything worked. Removed and cleaned all the connections. Still dead. hooked the jump pack to the main line in and ground, everything worked. Battery is fresh. Ran a positive jumper from batteverything went on line. ery to pump. Dead. Moved it to neg. post to pump ground. Bingo. Removed the ground wire and found a break in it behind the engine. Bad news is, we both lost a day on the boats. Good news, a $10 fix. He'll grab the parts this week. Thank you for the reply Lucrative! Every bit helps. ......I HATE wiring!!!!!!

Most electrical things need both a feed (power) and a ground(return) to operate electrically. Voltage alone is meaningless
