Still working on this thing, 1969 55 HP Evinrude.. 100 pounds of compression in Number 3 cylinder, New plugs, Cleaned out the fuel tank and added 91 octane with a 50:1 mixture, Plug fires alittle over a 1/4 inch when removed and hooked to the wire and grounded. When I replaced the old plugs there was wetness so I am assuming I have fuel, What in the world could be the problem???

Re: Dead Cylinder Question?

The problem I'm having sounds alot like jets' problem. Runs great in the driveway but doesn't want to run in the lake. Did get it run the other day for awhile but was still cutting out especially in the turns, would not run in reverse. It has been suggested that I clean the carbs but need someone much smarter than I to confirm.

See what happens if you pump the primer, wmsclan. Sounds like a fuel problem, but could be tank, lines, fuel pump or carbs. Maybe none of the above.<br /><br />Why did you title your post, Dead Cylinder?? What are you not telling us here?<br /><br />Revive and update your original request, so we can get a sense of history on this problem.<br /><br />Standing by.<br />JB

Re: Dead Cylinder Question?

What I meant by Dead cylinder was that with the motor running in the driveway, I can pull the plug wire from the plug and there is no change what-so-ever in the way the motor runs. On Number 1 and 2 the engine drops idle and gets rough. The compression on the cylinders is, 1-92, 2-100, 3-102. The primer bulb is hard when I am running it..

Re: Dead Cylinder Question?

Ahhh. Now I understand much better. #3 isn't making power.<br />*Adequate compression.<br />*Wet plug means fuel but no combustion.<br />*1/4" spark is not very strong. Should be at least 1/2"<br /><br />To confirm that there is fuel, crank her up and spray some WD-40 into the bottom carb while running. If it should pick up you have a carb problem. Don't think so.<br /><br />Does your engine have one coil and a distributor (CD ignition timed by mechanical points) or three coils (pointless, CD-3 ignition system)? My book says one coil and a distributor. Inspect the distributor, points (2 sets, under the distributor. Should be set at .010) and plug wire for #3.<br /><br />If you should have the CD-3 system, switch coils around and see if that moves the problem.<br /><br />That's enough for one session. Let us know what happens.<br /><br />Red sky at night. . . <br />JB
