Johnson 88 special.
no real history on motor(have no idea of hours). 1996, good compression, 108-110 all around.
finally got motor running real good. Had a coil and pp issue. All corrected.

Question is should I decarb or not. motor doesnt smoke and it idles pretty nice. Dont think I'll do it unless someone can tell me what the benifit is to do it to a good running motor.

There is no downside to doing it,
The upside is the "no real history of motor".
Not only would I do a seafoam but I'd go through everything from top to bottom, change all filters, rebuild carbs, water pump, gear oil with new seals on drain screws. Water seperator if it doesn't have one with a new filter.
Clean all elec grounds from battery to coils and everything inbetween.
The factory 100hr service calls for head gaskets too I think.
Thermostats.

2 questions....first what is sea foam?

Second....I have never heard of a factory sceduled maintenance for head gaskets, is there any reason you would have to change them, I never thought a head gasket was a "wear part"

Jones I did all on your list just to get it running. Boat fuel tank had 8 gallons of water in it, carbs were mucked up, lower unit oil was pretty dark, and most electrical connections under cowl were showing signs of corrosion. Have run about 100 miles and plenty of new gas through it by now and just was wondering why do the de carb if all is running well?

All said, it's really up to you. The decarb won't hurt, it can only help. When I decarbed my motor, it ran smoother, and I could swear it increased my overall top speed at WOT. The boat went from about 24-25mph top speed to 26-27mph. Oh, it also increased compression from 105 on each cylinder to 110.
