I bought an old Boston Whaler with (I was told) a 1984 55HP Evinrude. Howver the model number on the transom mount (55EL77D) tells me it's a 1977 Johnson. The motor is all Evinrude, paint, cover, etc. I've taken it to an OMC dealer but he couldn't confirm what it is. I can't find a Welch plug anywhere I've been told to look (definitely NOT behind the flywheel). I even bought both the Clymer ans Seloc manuals looking for some difference that would tell me what year it it. By the number of wires on the terminal block (4) and the additional plug with 4 wires from the stator and that the carbureator doesn't have an intermediate orifice, I'm pretty sure it's NOT a 1977. There also is what looks like a VRO nipple just under the fuel nipples but it wasn't hooker up to anything.

Can anything suggest something I could look for to tell me exactly what year this motor is?

Thanks for any suggestions.
