Dashboard Illumination

My previous boat had illuminated gauges which were powered directly off purple (ignition-On wire).
New dashboard has gauges and switches that are illuminated.
In that case, whats the most common way of turning illumination:
-directly off ignition switch
-off navigation light switch, preferred
-other?

Since I never had experience with any other boats (that I did pay attention), I'm open for opinions.

How are your gauges/switches illuminated?

Thanks,
Daniel

Ideally you would want to be able to dim or turn off the lights when needed for nighttime navigation in my opinion.

This would require a dedicated switch for the dash lights.

That way you can keep your navigation lights on but still have night vision and not have to rely on spotlights.

The ideal way to have them wired is off the NAV side of the NAV/ANC switch. There is no need to have them on in broad daylight (wired from the ignition switch). Nor is it necessary to have them on when at anchor (off the anchor side of the switch). The only time instrument illumination is really necessary is when you are under way at night (e.g., when the NAV lights are on).

You could do it either way but I have to agree with Huron Angler on this one. I try to keep the ambient light to a minimum at night so I have an extra tall anchor light and only use the dash lights occasionally to check readings. Its not a huge deal, but I prefer a dedicated switch. Both my boats were wired this way from the factory.

Mine were wired from the factory to be on whenever the motor runs. The only advantage I've heard of from this setup is the heat from the bulbs drives out any moisture that gets into the gauges.

I personally prefer wiring to NAV circuit like silvertip said. although there is some merit in having a dedicated switch, although I've nevery had a problem with running at night with the gauge backlights on constantly. Although I dont run much at night... although although although... although:D

eitherway will work, I'd just avoid option 1 (directly off ignition switch)... why have them on durring the day? you can always run the NAV circuit durring the day if you want to dry out any moisture in them.

Ive decided to wire them via Navi light switch. It is convenient enough and doesnt require additional switch.
I need to buy some molex electrical connectors to make it factory (or better) and Ill be set.

Thanks for the input.

For me.....thru the nav. switch and a dimmer switch. I sometimes have the need to dim the gauges or black them out for some night time navigation. Good luck!
