I was at a lakeside restaurant last week where I witnessed and alarming bit of boating. A fellow had the hood off of his motor and was attempting to start it with a rope. The rope was about 7 feet long. He would wrap it around the flywheel, then around his hand several times and allow the loose end to dangle on and around the flywheel. I hope he did not get it to start because if it did, it surely would have tangled up the make-shift starting cord and sucked him right into the spinning flywheel gear.

Idiots.

Re: Darwin........

A funny version of that happened to a buddy of mine, we were running and gunnin for whitebass, watching for the gulls and shooting over there, while the fish were breaking. I was in my boat, my friend and his 12 year old son in his. He had the cowl off his Merc. because he had to pull start it, we got up near a small sandy beach and there was a group of NUDE female sunbathers, my friend and his son got in a tug of war over the binoculars, during which my friend allowed the line from his expensive rod and reel to get caught up in the flywheel, it whipped the rod out into the river and it was never seen again.

A friend and I were working on a cranky motor and he leaned over the flywheel, with a duck call on a lanyard dangling over the flywheel. I moved him back in time, but I still get the heebie jeebies imagining it getting caught and pulling his face down on the flywheel. Although he was right ugly to start with.

well!!? Who got the binoculars!!!?:D

They were still squabbling about it for quite a while, but they had to give it up to try and retrieve the rod and all the commotion alerted the sunbathers!

The same guy and his son and I were in that same boat, going out fishing when we passed an anchored runabout with a very, VERY impressive young lady sitting on the bow, the poor thing had lost the top to her bathing suit apparently, it caught our attention and she noticed and waved at us, its a good thing nothing was in front of us, because NOBODY was watching where we were going. After we got our heads turned back around, I yelled at my buddy,"Why didn't you slow down"! He said,"I forgot"!

Re: Darwin........

Anyone ever accidentally melt a hole in a truck's gas tank filler tube with an acetylene torch? Just wondering.

in early broncos, the auxilliary tank is below the driver's seat, right about the same location you might drill holes to install seat belts or a roll cage. I've read plenty of people who learned how to repair a gas tank that way...

No. But I have set fire to, my pants, (no I'm not a liar) a Jeep Pickup, and a Great Northern RR coach, while I was welding.

i've set fire to my jeans with a torch but worse yet was after filling vehicles with fuel for a few horus in the military, came back to the barracks. buddy was BS'in around and through a lit match in my direction. (he had no idea what I had been doing earlier) needless to say my shirt went up in flames quick. apparently fumes stay in cotton pretty well.

i also watched a guy in florida fuel a truck with a lit cigarette in his mouth. had a bad ending, man down RIP. nothing we could do for him.

Re: Darwin........

there was a discussion here a while ago, that turned into an argument, about whether a lit cigarette was enough "fire" to light gasoline fumes.
You settled it!
