Heh, well i was going to pick up a stainless prop but found out I was broke. Funny thing that. Hopefully my income tax return will come soon.

Anyhow, for those that forget, I am running a Glastron GT205 with a 4.3TKS merc and an Alpha One outdrive. The current prop is a 21pitch aluminum. Last night we were out watching the fireworks, and on the way out with 4 adults, a full tank of fuel, coffees, donuts and other assorted requirements I managed to hit the rev limiter within a few seconds. The manual says I should be running 4800 WOT, and the rev limiter seems to kick in around 5200-5400 RPM. I wasn't cavitating, as I lowered the trim down to see, it reduced RPM a bit, but also the speed. So I figure that's pretty crappy. Now a friend of mine has a 24p aluminum that he's not using and offered it over to me to try out. Anyone think this might be too much for my boat? Also, do you still agree that I could go with a 19 stainless? My buddy is saying I should actually go up with stainless...but then..he says odd things now and then. I'll probably keep the 21 for tubing and stuff to see if it's still good for that, if not sell it off, and recover some stainless costs. :D

Geez..where is that tax return??? /looksinmailbox

What speed did you get? While it may be possible to hit the limiter
with that load it doesn't seem to me that it would be so easy.
The 24 would put you around 4600 to 4,800.Just doesn't seem to me that
a 24" with that load would run at that rpm.But I have been known to be wrong on very rare ocasions.

Re: Darn it...ran outta money!

We were just hitting about 48mph (77km/hr per GPS). I too was thinking a 24 was going to be too tall, that said, normally the boat will have 1 person (me) 50%, 2 people (me and the missus) 45%, and a crew of friends with tubing and another silliness 5% of the time. We did have a stiff tail wind during this (about 15 km/hr) so it may have effected actual speed, but we were heading out on the lake (Lake Ontario).

Me: 160#
Missus: A fair bit less (I won't say, don't want a divorce)
Friend 1: About the same as the missus say about 110 (hehe..see how I did that?)
Friend 2: 280# He's a big fatty, but a good guy...we like him.

Re: Darn it...ran outta money!

So I've been thinking.

21P Stainless or 24P Aluminum..depending on when my tax return comes.

Anyone think this is good? Unfortunately not to many shops around here that will do an exchange like that...so I'll have to take what I can buy. Hopefully I can get that prop (24P) from my friend this weekend for a test run, but I think I'd prefer a stainless..it has more *bling* hehe..

Re: Darn it...ran outta money!

LOLS< I needed to reread that, thanks.

Edit:

Although there was still some question, I only see the BayProIII for my outdrive listed as a four blade SS at 21P...although the HR Titan is on sale right now. I am guessing that you feel that the 22P Bay Pro II will be too much.

Also, there was no mention as to what would be an appropriate aluminum prop (helps me budget a bit, as I can get a 24 for free). I should have continued that thread, I apologize.

Re: Darn it...ran outta money!

If your boat normally runs at 4800rpm with the 21" pitch prop, then it doesn't make sense to be hitting the rev limiter with an extra load? It could be your prop, or coupler, temporarily slipping with the extra load, causing you to hit the rev limiter. One of my boats did that yrs ago only when loaded down, I think it was the coupler. With your 20' boat, & a 4.3V6, I think that 21" pitch aluminum is about right, or a 19" pitch SS, but I don't think that 24" pitch is gonna work for you.

Re: Darn it...ran outta money!

I ran it today on a smooth lake with just the wife again, was able to hit the limiter without cavitating. This boat planes instantly...you'd be surprise..so I am guess it's pretty efficient design...I dunno. The first test in my previous thread there was high winds, and I don't think I was truly full throttle. The draw back with the hull design is it slaps the waves a bit, sorta like a tri-hull, as at the top of the v it flattens out about 5-10". Can make for a rough ride.

Re: Darn it...ran outta money!

If your thinking aluminum check out the Turning point Hustler.Close to stainless performance at aluminum prices.I would say a 23.
If you can get a 24 for free by all means try it out.If nothing else it will
help tell where your at.

Re: Darn it...ran outta money!

Hey lil fishy, What's a 4.3 TKS Mercruiser? I'm kinda "old school" & curious, I need to know horsepower to get an idea of how fast a boat should go. I know a Glastron has been one of my favorite boats for years, and they really are efficient, but if you tell me you have a 220hp 4.3 V6, I can guess your boat should do about 50mph with a 21" pitch prop. A 24" pitch may keep you in the rpm range 4200-4600, but I'd guess on the low end of it, & you may not see an increase in speed. I agree you should try it, I would ;)

Re: Darn it...ran outta money!

It's the 190 hp carb'd version with california emissions. The dealer mention that the boat should easily hit 50+...and was surprised when I gave him the GPS reading under 50 (post sale, so he has nothing to prove).
