Damaged Dining Room table, any suggestions?

A hot Iron was unfortunately placed on the Maple inlay on a towel on the dining room table leaving a white impression on the wood. There appears to be a clear coat on the wood, I think it was the clear coat that was burned off leaving that white image. Before I try to buff out the white mark of the image of an Iron and ruin the entire table that wasn't exactly cheap does anyone among our talented group have any suggestions? Someone suggested carpenters crayon. Is there such a thing? I know that with the bevy of talented members here someone may know a remedy besides my wife out shopping for a new set up. You think the fix is in, a set up? She can be a sly gal, oh she sure can be.

I believe it is Maple. Definitely not Oak.

Thanks, John D.

Last time I had something happen on the dinner table that created the same situation, I sanded it, then resprayed it will a poly clear and you could not tell it had been damage at all.

Yeah, re finishing the top is the best route to go. Patching will not likely work, you don't know what type of varnish was on it when it was built. I was refinishing one time and my friend who paints cars said bring it over when you think it's ready for coating. I did. He sprayed it with automotive clear coat, looked perfect. Small scratches are bigger out just like on a car.

Before you refinish, if the towel was wet and the heat created a steam impression, you may be able to wash it with Murphy's oil soap and then use some Old English polish. Not going to guarantee the results you want, but it could save you a lot of work, or add just a little in washing and polishing time.

Stripping is definitely out, nobody wants to see me naked, there was a time though. It's tough being a retired Male Model I tell ya'. Seriously though, the table has several inlays where the grain goes in several directions. I could grow a tree and build a table from it before I got this thing sanded properly. If it was a solid piece it would have been stripped and finished by now. I did strip in the past, but not on stage.

Someone suggested to put a damp towel on it and low heat from the Iron, more than 1 actually. I dunno, that's how it made the impression in the 1st place. Keep them coming all. Thanks. JD.

If you sand it down; please do not use a belt sander. You cannot keep it level; a body sander works better. I would try brown shoe polish for stain

DA with 320 grit followed by 600 and you wont even touch the grain, just remove the offending finish. solvent wipe and spray and your good to go

OK, it's official! I was set up. After I made a nice Frittata with Asparagus, red onion, Zucchini topped witch Bocconcini then under the salamander to brown and a Caesar salad ala JD for supper I passed on the suggestions to remove the burn. " Don't worry about it Johnny D you bought a new dining table and 6 nice chairs today." Thanks for the heads up cupcake. Since we are doing the reno to put the cottage up for sale, apparently there is something called "staging". The definition of staging is buy new stuff that will help sell a joint and move into the new digs with new furniture!!!!!!!! Oh yea, sell with all stainless steel appliances then go and buy new at 3 times what I paid wholesale to save $$$ on moving costs, yea right doll face. I was born on a Thursday, not last Thursday. She happy, me happy. (Actually I'm pumped, I get a newer commercial gas stove and fridge, me no stupida.)

Thanks for the suggestions guys. I have a new desk/Art table with a burn in it. I will put a table cloth on it, it's a beautiful table and it's all mine. When I have some time I am going to try the hot towel. Murphy Oil Soap and Old English Lemon Oil, that is how I keep all my hardwood furniture looking new and what I used on the burled Walnut on the 69 Benz. If it is a refinish I will strip the entire table and do it right, after fishing season.
