Hello,

I wanted to rebuild my old '76 Merc 500. Now the crankshaft was damaged at one of the rod bearings and i thought i could use the other one i still have in my second engine. But there, the crankshaft ist badly damaged at the lower oil seal

Now just out of curiosity, what can cause the following things??

This is, the first one, where the needles of the rod bearing should be.

And here is the second one. The funny thing is, the seal looks like in perfect condition. I just don't understand it. Well, it seems it's over now. A new crankshaft for a '76 Merc isn't worth the effort.

Re: damaged crankshaft

I would put a speedi sleeve on the seal area and roll with it. the first one looks like water damage or excessive high RPM with no load.
