Damaged 1990 Lund

So I have the chance to buy a 1990 Lund 1850 Tyee for $2500. It has a Yamaha 150hp outboard on the back, brand new foot controlled trolling motor and fish finder. Seats need to be recovered or replaced, but after a good clean up the interior isn't too bad. The boat runs good, could use a carb tune up, but even in this condition the motor is probably worth the price. The current owner bought the boat off an auction as a salvaged boat, as someone ran it into the dock. The front is dented up and not in the best shape, but he assures me it drives straight and hasn't had any problems with it, and I was going to take it out for a test next week. It just sits now and he wants to get rid of it as he don't get out anymore. So my question is, can this be fixed in any way or even repaired to be less noticeable? The pictures make it look worse than it looks in real life, but either way, its there!

One of those big rubber nose guard things like you see on tug boats or maybe a eseciton of car tire bolted down. But seriously, if that boat has been out in the weather for an extended period of time, that damage looks like it would let a lot of water in and there could be some hidden damage. Stringers and wiring come to mind. I'd be leary buying a boat from someone who apparently doesn't mind his boat being damaged to that degree.

It's been tarped and covered while its sat there, as I used to rent the house it sat behind. He had it out last walleye season as well, but it hasn't been out this year. The floors all seem to be in good shape, but I guess I'd have to look a little closer under the panels to really tell.

There are no wood stringers in this boat so that's not an issue. There are lots of gaps up front to let water in but depending on your skills working with aluminum you could make it fairly presentable. The blue deck cover can be removed by feeling around for the screws. Removing that reveals the aluminum deck plate which would need to be removed to survey the port side damage. Provided there is good access, the dents can be pushed out but DO NOT attempt to hammer them out with a hammer. Small 2x4 blocks covered with thick carpet or rubber can be used as body dollies. A large rubber mallet will work fine. You must avoid "kinking" the metal - therefore pushing is preferred.

Thanks for the advice Silvertip. Good to know there are no wood stringers as well! I'm going to take it for a test drive when I get a chance and if everything checks out I think for $2500 I'll give it a shot. If I can get access under those panels I think I could make the hull presentable and fix those top gaps with some time.

I think the price is still a little high. That hull has little value by itself with that kind of damage. You're really buying a motor and a trailer. Is that 20 year old motor (that needs some work) and trailer (can't see how decent it is) worth $2500? I'm thinking more like $1500.

It would be nice to get and then find a decent motorless tinny (Starcraft? :p) to swap all those goodies over to.

Well maybe your right... Guess I'm just used to the ridiculous price tags most Lunds come with, and figured it was right with some damage. Hopefully I can talk him down some. I know it isn't perfect, but I'm just graduating college so funds are scarce. If I have a decent boat to take out fishing, I can live with a few eye sores until I can afford something better.

Around here (in western Canada) $2500 won't buy much. If it doesn't leak, runs good, drives straight, and if one can make it look more presentable with a little work, I might go for it.

The one thing that might dissuade me would be that big old thirsty outboard. It likely comes with an expensive gasoline habit.

Re: Damaged 1990 Lund

Many years ago my boat was in a car accident and had similar damage. Naturally, with that kind of impact, there were forces transmitted thru the entire hull. You have no way of knowing how the seams held up or any of the rivets for that matter. Mine looked OK after I made minimal repairs, then I took the insurance money and sold it quick. I heard later from the next owner that it began to leak badly the next year. (I sold it cheep and the new owner was fully informed about the circumstances)

IMHO, $2500 is too much to pay. I'll bet that the guy selling it already got enough insurance money to cover his loss.

Re: Damaged 1990 Lund

Well with everyones advice I think I'm going to try to get the boat out to the lake and test it thouroghly, making sure there are no leaks. The current owner bought the boat right after it was damaged, so he's owned it for many years, and states there are no problems. If I think the boats going to be worth it I'll try and talk him down, otherwise my search will continue.
