hi all
recently aquired a boat with a d183 turbo ac engine. on the last trip the battery light come on and the rev counter stopped working. what amp should the alternator be?
i am not sure if it is the original alternator or not as there are no model numbers or serial numbers on it. the wiring is the main + wire, a wire which runs the volt meter and battery light, a wire which runs the rev counter and the earth. when i got the boat the earth was disconnected off the alternator. do i need to reconnect it?
at tick over the alternator gave out just over 13 volts but now reads just under 12 on tick over. on about half revs the volt meter will show the volts increasing to 13 but then it will drop back to below 12 and flick between 12 and 13. with no wires connected the test alternator meter shows the same.
are there any replacement alternators out there?
whats to stop me using a car alternator with the same ampage?
cheers
jason
