This is the prayer originally entitled "Let Our Hearts Be Stout" written by President Franklin D. Roosevelt as Allied troops were invading German-occupied Europe during World War II. The prayer was read to the nation on radio on the evening of D-Day, June 6, 1944, while American, British and Canadian troops were fighting to establish beach heads on the coast of Normandy in France.

Prayer

Allied losses in the whole two months of the Normandy Invasion:

53,700 dead,
18,000 missing
155,000 wounded

Yes, thanks LF. And just like Pearl Harbor, we hear less and less about these events.

The modern day peace-nics would have lost their flippin mind hearing those casulty reports.

Thanks LF, not only for the spoken reminder of a fleeting moment in history, but for an expression of it that would be utterly intolerable today!

Nothing can be more noble than man fighting for the freedom of their fellow man.
An era in the history of humanity that ought to not ever be forgotten.

Somehow i cannot ever imagine any of todays so called liberal politicians speaking with such a staunch conviction.

Thanks, LF.

It is always great to hear and read a great orator practice his gift.

Contrary to what some might think, most "peace-nics" love this country, and what it stands for. Everyone should want peace. There are times in human history when, for whatever reason, wars have been unfortunately necessary.

Any casualty of war is unfortunate. While the casuality rate was high back then, it was clearly a necessary action against a real and imminent threat to our way of life.

It is not specifically the number of casualties that bother many people today, but rather the real nature of the threat faced, the necessity of the action taken, and the careful planning undertaken in order to achieve the identified result with the least number of casualties.

thanks ladyfish, yep I had to put flowers on a headstone of a relative I never knew thats in the cematary up the street, he was my grandfathers first cousin and died on juno.
grandad always did it and I guess I just keep it up.
as far as the casualty rate we were fighting a defined war with an objective and an exit stratagy.
if we had to fight another defined war you would see staggering losses.
our methods and technology for killing have quadrupaled since 1944.
but roosevelt and Eisenhower both knew the only way to conquer is to occupy and he who gets there the firsts with the mosts can occupy.
a lesson or current admin ditched for lightening fast highly mobile propaganda.
propaganda is good until you base policy on it and start believing your own propaganda.
for those out there that have never walked the rows of arlington or attempted to read all 50K+ names on the wall I dare you to try it dry eyed.
with any luck I will be in normandy for the next june 6th.
there are a few spots in the south pacific I gotta go see as well. good thing I still qualify for MAC/NALO flights.
