Hi I have a 1955 5.5 hp johnson. I was wondering would I be able to put a Cylinder head on it from a 1963 5.5 hp johnson. And if not what model year heads will work on my engine. Thanks, Dan

Hmmm... that's a good question. I have a couple of '54 5.5's and a '61 and am not sure if they are the same. The only way to be sure is to compare part numbers from the parts manuals I reckon.

Same gasket can be used on a 5.5 for years from 54 to 58 and then from 59 to 79. Not saying that answers your question, but all I could find. Lots of guys on here knowledgeable in these older motors, Im sure FR or WBeaton would be able to tell you.

Well thanks for help. I thought the same thing to but was wondering if it may be possible.

Re: Cylinder head swap

The earlier years did not have a thermostat, therefor the later years will not interchange....same reason the gasket is different.

Even the earlier years' Johnson and Evinrudes are probably different because of the different hood mounts. So that kind of narrows it down to '58 Johnson or older so far as compatibility is concerned
