Cylinder head minimum thickness

I am working on a 1994 90hp force for a family member and found that it had a blown head gasket. I removed the head and it appears it has been seeping for a while and finally blew big time. I am going to have the head milled but I do not know the minimum thickness the head can be just so I can advise the machinest. Probably will not need much shaving but just in case. Is this a spec. listed in a service manual and if so does anyone have that info? Thanks, Brandon

Why do you want to have the head milled? Is it warped? Just wondering why you can't clean the mating surfaces up and install a new head gasket? Can you post a picture? Good luck...

Re: Cylinder head minimum thickness

As far as I know, Chrysler recommended milling only .010 and Force should be similar.

HOWEVER: I have milled off up to .060 and there is still clearance for the piston baffle. Only thing is that with this much metal removed, compression will increase and you may need a higher octane gasoline than regular.

I suspect that if you needed as much as .030 to clean up the mating surfaces, there would be no problem

I had mine milled .030 on my 1988 125HP and it was fine.

Thanks for the info. The head has some minor pitting at the edge where the fire ring sits and don't want to take any chances. I also put a straight edge long ways down the center of the head and there is a small amount of daylight between 1 and 2 and 2 and 3. I think it will clean up under .020 I hope. Thanks for the help!

I had pitting in one of my heads. Salt water is not my friend.I had to get the pitting filled with an aluminum spot weld. Then they took off .020 and it works fine. The hole was about 1/8in.deep.J
