I have a tilt cylinder leaking and was going to repair but on tear-down, noticed quite a bit of scoring in the walls of the cylinder and a brake hone won't remove them so I ordered a new cyl. assembly...Now, here's the problem...this engine came from NJ, and you can guess what the corrosion factor is...anyway, I've heated the housing, being careful not to over-heat and ruin all the remaining seals, and I have laid into the pivot pin with a 9lb sledge and can't make it budge. I've removed these on other engines many times and never have I had one this "stuck"...any help would be great if someone has an Idea other than replacing the entire TNT unit.
1982 200 Rude

You might try using a porta power jack if you have room and some way of bracing it.

took the easy route....cut-off wheel on either side of cylinder, remove cyl. and drive out pieces from each side.....it'll take a new pin, but oh well.....

with oxy acetylene i have had some stiff ones but never had a pin that wont come out. be careful not to mushroom the end of the pin. if your are careful with the tourch its possible to burn the pin without damagine the aluminium. mapp and propane just aint hot enough.

Re: Cyl. Pin, TNT center position.

I am not trying to hijack this thread, but I need to replace my tilt motor. I did cut off the pin as suggested and removed the PTT mounting bolts. I cannot remove the bolt that goes through the engine support brackets and the PTT. I actually thought that the PTT would pivot on that bolt, but it won't budge. The long "thru-bolt" looks very rusted and I will probably need to cut that off too. Any other suggestions?

Top pin or bottom pin walleyehed??
I've had several motor that the lower pin was forze. Not froze in the transom mounts but froze in the tilt@trim unit. I hoisted the motors and split the transom mounts and took them off from each side. Pull the tilt/steering tube out and anything else connecting across the mounts.

Bottom pin on mine, Walker...it was stuck, and I mean STUCK on the mounts and the cylinder.
I cut the pin on either side of the cylinder to get it out of the way and you would not believe the force it took to get the remainder of the pin removed from each mount...
I also installed a new cylinder, so I didn't have to remove the piece in it.

You never ran into that before?? Oh my! Welcome to the wonderful world of salt.

Now, you did grease the pin so the next time it'll slide right out, right?

No, never stuck THAT bad....
Yes, it got Mercruiser Gimble bearing grease on the cylinder with new bushings and anti-sieze on the mounts...

You know what they say -- everything starts as loose fit, tight fit or press fit and ends up salt stuck fit.

Well, around here anyway.

I gotta quit getting S.W. engines for cores...
that would help, and cut my rebuild time in half.
