Cutting off shifting out of gear

My dad's 2000 Evinrude 150 cuts off shifting from forward to neutral. It shifts fine from reverse to neutral. It will also start in gear. Any suggestions? Is there some kind of sticking "burp switch"? Or "shift assist" like on my I/O?
Thanks

Re: Cutting off shifting out of gear

It's probably the switch. It cuts off half the cylinders, so if everything is not running well the engine can stall.

If you want to disable the switch just disconnect the ground wire at the switch, but be careful because it can make getting out of forward difficult.

Behind the shift lever on the starboard side of the engine.
