Cutlass Bearing removal - advice please.

Greetings,

I need to replace the Cutlass Bearing on the boat I am restoring and am not sure whether I am doing it right. I have removed a grooved rubber liner from inside the housing and this came out fairly easily but there appears to be a sleeve of some other fibrous(?) material still inside the housing. Do I need to remove this as well or do I just buy a new rubber liner?

If I do have to remove the fibrous sleeve what would be the normal procedure for doing this considering the type of housing I have, which is only accessible from the rear?

Some pics below show the housing, sleeve and liner.

Thanks,
bluey.

Re: Cutlass Bearing removal - advice please.

The "cutlass bearing" is made up of both the grooved rubber part that you got out and the outer 'shell' (usually either brass or a phenolic material - as yours looks to be). They are bonded together into one "Cutlass bearing". So, ..... you are halfway there sort of. Usually there is a set screw or two through the side of the strut or stern tube that holds the bearing in place (I don't see any, but can't see the other side). I might guess that your bearing was pressed or glued into the stern tube. If it were me I'd probably meke a puller with some threaded rod & some sort of 'hooks' that can grab the back edge of the bearing shell, and maybe with a bit of heat on the outside of the stern tube see if I can get it to come out.
