I was looking around, and came up on some websites that sold Custom Rod kits. Have any of you ever built your own rod like these? I would love to try it out and only would want to spend about $40-50 on the kit. Would the rod be THAT much better than buying a rod from say BPS for the same price? I bass fish if that helps narrow things down. Thanks!

Re: Custom Rod Kits

If you value your time at all the answer to your question is no. You will not save any money and you probably will not build a better rod.

I've been building rods for friends and club members for about 7-8 years now. Like anything, the quality comes from knowledge gained through experience and perfecting the tricks of the trade.

It is a very rewarding hobby. If you have a lot of patients and are good with your hands, go for it. Just beware that everything you need to make a rod isn?t included in the kit. I ended up spending close to $100 is tools, adhesives, a hand wrapper and a dryer before I completed my first rod.

Just don?t do it to save money because you never will. Even building at wholesale cost, I spend just as much, usually more, than I would on a factory rod. The big difference is that the rod was built for me. The colors are right, the grips are just right and best of all it has my signature on it. Not that of some Bass Pro that I?ve never met nor care to met. ;)
